What is Acne?

Acne, commonly known as pimples, is a chronic skin condition that develops due to various factors, involving the inflammation of blackheads. It manifests as blackheads (comedones), white papules, red swellings, and hardened areas. If left untreated, it can sometimes progress into severe cysts.

Does Acne Generally Begin During Adolescence?

Acne begins during adolescence, and young individuals aged 14-16 experience varying degrees of acne. This period activates hormones that regulate sebaceous glands. It’s most commonly seen in girls between 14-17 years and in boys between 16-19 years. By the mid-20s, it tends to diminish and cease.

How Does Acne Develop?

During adolescence, hormonal factors increase the activity of sebaceous glands, leading to skin oiliness. Excessive sebum secretion narrows the follicular ducts, resulting in blockages that initiate problems. Oxidized secretions form blackheads. Subsequently, the intervention of bacteria (Propionibacterium acne) amplifies inflammation, exerts pressure on surrounding tissues, and spreads, causing severe inflammatory acne, cysts, and abscesses.

Factors in its Formation

Acne has a genetic predisposition. Additionally, certain cosmetic creams, oil-based moisturizers, and cosmetics containing oil-based formulas commonly used in daily life can induce acne formation. It’s essential to look for “non-comedogenic” and “non-acnegenic” labels on chosen products. Individuals working in chemical and petroleum production facilities under warm and humid conditions, those in contact with hydrocarbons, industrial oils, and coal often experience acne, and in some cases, the condition worsens. Certain medications used for treatment, like cortisone, can cause or exacerbate acne. Stress is another significant contributor to acne formation.

Actions to Take in Acne Treatment

  • Wash your face with a suitable cleanser according to your skin type at least 3-4 times daily.
  • Increase intake of fruits like oranges, lemons, grapes, rich in Vitamin C and zinc, and other similar foods.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Absolutely refrain from picking or scratching pimples as it can lead to infection, pigmentation, and scarring.
  • Avoid using oily cosmetics.
  • Minimize stress levels.
